The Boom in Residential Solar Installations

The Residential Solar Installation Industry has recently seen an influx of demand. Homeowners have been shopping around for ‘off the grid’ solutions since loadshedding have started years ago, but now in 2022 more and more people are starting to invest. This is mainly due to the extended periods of load shedding, cheaper solar financing, and price increases of Eskom.

The average South African homeowner is currently able to finance his solar installation at approximately R1500 per month; and in turn save approximately R1500 per month on his Eskom electricity bill. Read more about these calculations here. Note that these numbers are based on ‘average electricity bills in SA’ and may be different at your municipality.

This trend has only started, which means that Residential Solar Installation Businesses should continue to see an increase in demand for many years to come. Many small local solar businesses (with only one installation team) are already making a profit of R80k+ per month and can’t stay up with demand.

Due to this rising demand and a profitable industry, South Africa has recently had a surge of inexperienced opportunists entering the solar installation market. Needless to say, they are doing more damage than good. However – this presents the opportunity for solar businesses doing installations the right way. The industry will soon become much more regulated, so rather start the right way.

Requirements to start a certified and sustainable Solar Business

Before you start, make sure you meet the main requirement: Electrical Experience. The most difficult part in the solar installation process is the electrical wiring. You need insights and experience in dealing with electricity as each installation project is different. You are recommended to have at least three years’ experience with electrical systems.

In the short term, anyone can hustle to sell a few solar systems here and there… However, if you want to build a sustainable business which is producing a consistent profit, you need to set up your solar business the right way. Here follows the 5x levels which you need to go through to get to have a sustainable solar business (or agency).

The Solar Agency Opportunity - starter package at R 24 900

Our sister company, Solar Partners, researched the solar industry and found that homeowners are seeking local solar installers – rather than national companies. This is mainly due to the ongoing support that may be required, maintenance / upgrades, and trust. However, local installers are struggling to keep up and they do not have a team to support them with areas such as compliance, marketing, experienced installer support, procurement management, getting to the right lead, and offering client financing / rental options.

So, we have pulled together a Team of Solar Experts across South Africa to create and support ‘Solar Agencies’. It has been setup in a similar fashion as a franchise, where qualifying entrepreneurs can buy a ‘business in a box’ and get ongoing support. This agency will enable you to start a solar business from scratch and reach Level 4 in the Solar Business Building process (picture above) within a few weeks.
